Was excited to read what's been happening with #GABAA receptor #ionchannel drug basmisanil these past years (PMID: 33833333). Highlights epic efforts required to get drugs to clinic. Fingers crossed for #schizophrenia trial!

The neurotoxin alpha-Cobratoxin which causes paralysis by acting on nicotinic acetylcholine receptors is shown here bound to a GABA-A receptor to stabilize the ā€œrestingā€ (closed) state.

The endogenous neuromodulator, zinc, is shown to block the GABA-A receptor pore at a high sensitivity site on the extrasynaptic alpha-beta receptor type.

The receptor is ā€œcapturedā€ bound by GABA but with the 9’ activation pore gate closed. This is consistent with the low probability of opening that alpha-beta channels show (versus alpha-beta-gamma channels), a natural means to limit their impact on blocking nerve signalling.

Don’t like the idea of self-injecting antibodies to treat yourself? Eat them with strawberries instead! Seems too good to be true – incredible! ā€œStrawberry enhancer pelargonidin enables oral protein deliveryā€ Prof. Katie Whitehead pnas.org/doi/epdf/10.10…
