Having reviewed all the material, including body worn video from a recent incident in Bangor where police officers discharged firearms, the Police Ombudsman has concluded that there is nothing to indicate that there are grounds to consider opening an investigation.

The Police Ombudsman is to commence an independent investigation into an incident outside Barclays Bank, Belfast, on 24 May 2025, in which two people were arrested by police.   The decision has followed the review of a substantial amount of material, including body worn video.

In the latest NI Life and Times Survey, public awareness of the Police Ombudsman and its independence from police remained high - 91% of respondents were aware of the Office and 89% believed the Office was independent of the police. policeombudsman.org/publicawareness

The Police Ombudsman has concluded that the RUC investigation into the 1989 murder of John Devine was ‘seriously defective’. Mr Devine, a married father of three, was murdered in his home on 23 July 1989, when armed men shot him at close range. policeombudsman.org/JohnDevine

The Quarterly Statistical Bulletin has been published. It shows that between April and June 2025 PONI received 706 complaints. This is a 1% decrease when compared to last year. It is also the lowest number of complaints received in the first quarter since 2020/21
