Exploring the "Amarillo Mountains" started in the early 1900s for drilling. Robert Dewey, associate of Charles Gould, surveyed a piece of land on the Masterson ranch in northeastern Potter County. Info compiled by the two led to the discovery of the Panhandle Oil and Gas Field.

This Labyrinthodont Amphibian fossil in our Paleontology exhibit is from the Late Triassic period in Potter Co. This large aquatic animal seldom ventured on land. Its flat, bony skull was equipped with sharp teeth for spearing fish. A medial third eye was present on the skull.
