My research on #trust and #Governance during #COVID19 is now out open access in Political Studies here: journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/00…

Here's a brief [so] what, why, when and how: 1/n

Trust is necessary for democracy, but it assumes added saliency in times of uncertainty. Focusing on vertical relations b/ween governor & governed, and horizontal relations amongst politicians, I argue that trust & distrust may shape behavioural responses to crises like Covid-19.

I test these arguments w/ survey data gathered synchronously from the UK public & local politicians in April 2020 - shortly after the country entered national lockdown. Surveys included 24-item measures of political trust/distrust alongside measures of compliance & policy support

Measures were designed to capture different psychological facets of [dis]trust (as judgements) that mediate the relationship between one's generalised propensity to trust and behavioural decisions. Participants completed two iterations each, with the object/trustee altering.

In the paper, I briefly outline some practical strategies for politicians such as service/interactive leadership, value alignment, & communicating key facets of trustworthiness. Worryingly these are largely at odds with a transactional leadership model seen in the UK during Covid
