Ever wonder about those bumps on a humpback? It's all about tubercles! Did you know humpback whales have specialized bumps called tubercles? #humpbackwhales #animalanatomy #marinebio #didyouknowthis #educational

Our Research team works tirelessly, and are out in the field on the Research Vessel, the Kaiao. Sometimes, the Research team gets just lucky enough to catch sunset rays to observe the humpback whales, which makes the sights even more spectacular. #marineresearch #humpbacks

Did you know? Humpback whales travel in a nearly straight path during migration, but no one knows how they navigate. However, they typically return to the same breeding ground where they were born.

That's one long fin! Actually.... humpback whales have the longest pectoral fins of any whale or dolphin, as long as 15 feet or up to one third of their total body length!

All of our Research locations are lucky enough to have whales -but they are all over the world? Humpback whales are found throughout the world’s oceans and migrate annually from summer feeding grounds in polar waters to winter breeding grounds near the equator. (Like Hawai'i)

Have you seen a whale skyhop before? Spyhopping is when a whale vertically raises its head out of the water The whale is "looking around." Humpback whales, along with other cetaceans, are known to exhibit this behavior. They might do this for observation or curiosity!

We are lucky to see many phenomenal breaches from around the world, and sometimes we are even lucky enough to get those on camera. This perfect breach was captured by the talented @SelketKaufman on Maui, Hawai'i, this year. #whalebreach#humpbackwhale #mauihawaii

Often detected on whale flukes, “rake marks” are parallel scars likely caused by killer whale interactions. These flukes came from @pacificwhalefoundationoz, where whale season is just about to kick off in Hervey Bay! @pacificwhalefoundationoz

What defines a "breach?"🐋 A “breach” is when a whale leaps out of the water, in some instances propelling its entire body above the surface. Whales breach for various reasons as this behavior likely serves different functions throughout the course of their lives!
