An interesting little snippet as an aside to today's Bloomsday celebrations. Let's remember, arguably, the greatest poetic duo of the 20th century. Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes were married on this day, June 16th, 1956. Two great poetic minds. A poem from each to mark the day.

Born on this date, 23rd June 1889 in Odessa - Poet and activist, ANNA AKHMATOVA, become one of the great female Russian poets I give you one piece from her poem sequence, REQUIEM, which was banned at the time because she wrote it as a personal response to Stalinist oppression.

Recently, I have been reading Elizabeth Jennings' work, and the more I read, the more I feel drawn to it. It stirs something in my being... She is quoted as saying, "My poems and my faith are the most important things in my life." Poetry Ireland / Éigse Éireann poetry lovers Poetry Daily

Words can not describe how heartbroken and devastated we are... Your smile, your love for the game will never be forgotten. We will miss you so much, but you will stay with us forever, on and off the pitch. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family. Rest in peace, brother

It’s so difficult to find the right words when your head and heart are struggling to accept that someone you care so much about has gone. Diogo, your family was your world. They were everything. For Rute, his children, and his parents, all of our hearts are broken. And for Andre

Born the son of a poor labourer in Peterborough on this day, JOHN CLARE - forsaken by family and friends, he died in a lunatic asylum, having spent the last 22 years of his life there. He famously wrote; "If life had a second edition, how I would correct the proofs." Wise words!

On this day 98 years ago Countess Markievicz died. The poor of Dublin honoured her kindness to them - 300,000 attended her funeral procession from the Pillar Room at the Rotunda to the Republican Plot at Glasnevin. We honour her.

Two poems from the wonderful Elizabeth Jennings - born on this day, 18th July 1926 (died 26th Oct. 2001). I've recently gone back to reading her work and had forgotten how much I enjoyed it. Her poems and her faith were cornerstones in her life. Poetry Ireland / Éigse Éireann The Poetry Society

Wendy Cope, born on this day, 21st July 1945 - Her poetry is generally regarded as humorous and light-hearted. A lover of life and living it fully. I love this form, the Villanalle, and sometimes use this poem of hers in workshops as a fine example of the form. Difficult form???
