🚨New preprint!🚨 Why do people keep signaling virtue in public despite the social costs? We think our public virtue looks principled—but others’ looks like reputation management. Self-serving bias strikes again! Link: shorturl.at/2Sfeh

🚨New preprint!🚨 With Kyle Fiore Law, PhD and Liane Young we find Americans care about future generations more than we think—but underestimate this shared concern. This misperception could weaken intergenerational collective action: shorturl.at/y5M95 #IntergenerationalJustice

Now officially out in PNASNews! Nearly 90% of Christian religious leaders believe in anthropogenic climate change. American congregants underestimate this consensus. Communicating this consensus has important consequences for norms and beliefs! doi.org/10.1073/pnas.2…

New paper by Paige Amormino and colleagues! They develop and validate a short form of the Social Discounting Task—a fast, reliable measure of how altruism declines with social distance. Perfect for tight surveys or large-scale studies. journals.sagepub.com/doi/epub/10.11…

New preprint! Do people who care about future generations actually do less to help others today? Across 3 studies—including both deceased and non-directed living organ donors—we find the opposite: Concern for the distant future predicts altruism now. šŸŒšŸ«€ šŸ‘‰

Interested in measuring individual differences in altruism/prosocial behavior? Paige Amormino has developed a new, brief assessment that (in my view) is much better than self-report measures or existing economic games. It's called The Social Discounting Short-Form (SDT-SF)

Our lab benchmarks laboratory tasks that measure prosociality against real-world behavior and have found many lab measures don't seem to correspond to actual prosocial behaviors at all. The social discounting task RELIABLY does... better than anything else we've tried. E.g.

Bƶckler et al (2016) also found it was the task that loaded most strongly onto a latent "altruistically motivated prosocial behavior" factor: doi.org/10.1177/194855…

The standard SDT has many trials, reducing its transparency and improving signal:noise ratio. However, it can make the task burdensome for participants to complete and researchers to score. The SDT-SF improves on this without reducing validity! It takes only ~3 minutes.

And here is a link to the Center for Open Science materials to run it, including: • A preprint • An annotated, easy-to-follow analysis pipeline in R • Dummy data for practice • A .qsf file of the task that can be easily imported into Qualtrics osf.io/nsv3k/files/os…

A huge congratulations to Dr. Paige Amormino, who successfully defended her fantastic dissertation on altruism, social discounting, homophily, and the social factors that shape them--and who we celebrated in an LSAN lab party last night (just before the rains hit)! Psychology @ Georgetown
