The Scottish Parliament has passed a bill which gives carers a legal right to short breaks. And gives people in care homes a right to receive visitors. Good news, but there's some context to consider, as our Parliamentary and Campaigns Manager, Tanith Muller, explains #CarersWeek

Today is Scotland’s National #DayofMovement. And we're talking about how all forms of movement can make you feel good. Particularly people with long-term conditions like Parkinson's. Big or small, all movements are counted. Here's our own Amanda McKay on the benefits of walking.

Although PIP has been replaced by Adult Disability Payment in Scotland, this bill will have huge direct and indirect impacts here, eg: 🔹£470m+ cut to Scottish Government budget 🔹Big cuts to UK-wide Universal Credit/ ESA for ppl who can't work 🔹No way to claim UC / ESA from Scotland

Despite the devastating impact it will have on disabled people, the NHS and local services, the Government has applied to speed up the process in Parliament and experts in the House of Lords could be ignored. Reducing the scrutiny of these proposals is wrong and dangerous.

The @UKGov’s disastrous plans for disability benefits will impoverish many disabled people. They've not been consulted. The impacts on their lives are unexplored. Their futures now depend on chaotic 11th hour negotiations. They remain shut out. Surely we can do better than this?

This happened yesterday. Today MPs will vote. We hope that they will reject the Bill, which will impoverish people with Parkinson's in the future, in Scotland and the rest of the UK.

The Universal Credit health element cuts remain part of the bill and will impact people in Scotland and the rest of the UK. We urge the UK government to reconsider.

Delighted to have 63 MPs and cross party support for my amendment that will be discussed this afternoon to ensure people with fluctuating conditions can still apply for to Universal Credit Health component. Thanks to Parkinson's UK for their help.

I welcome this specific confirmation from Sir Stephen Timms that the Severe Conditions criteria will apply to those whose symptoms fluctuate, and whose conditions are constant. I will continue to monitor the application of these guidelines to ensure they work as Ministers intend.

.Ganley Lab studies the failure of a self-cleaning mechanism within the body that could have a role in the development of Parkinson’s. His team invented a new tool that’s revolutionised the pace of progress in this area of research. More in the North of Scotland Parkinsons Research Interest Grp podcast out this week.
