1/n This iNaturalist observation by Roman Prokhorov from Sri Lanka shows the female of a spider first described by Rev O Pickard-Cambridge from Ceylon in 1882 as Chrysso ? quadrata. It is listed in World Spider Catalog as Theridion quadratum but is not a Theridion. inaturalist.org/observations/3…

While in the rain forests of Sri Lanka, seeing flightless endemic grasshoppers like Rakwana ornata in intact forests & fully winged widespread species in open, disturbed areas left a lasting impression in me. I wonder, did G M Henry too think about this? inaturalist.org/observations/2…

Henry’s Yellow-winged Dwarf Bamboo Grasshopper, Ochlandriphaga xanthelytrana, monotypic genus endemic to 🇱🇰. Another cool iNaturalist observation by liuye. (Wish so much G M Henry was still around to see these iN obs of grasshoppers he discovered!🥹) inaturalist.org/observations/2…

Last week, our Summer Systematics Institute interns presented their research posters at the SACNAS #2024NDiSTEM conference in Phoenix. 2 of our students, Keily and Dylan, took home awards for their posters! 🏆 Congrats to all of our interns! (Including the ones that used more than 3 words.)

Received a message today from someone who used to send me photos of insects & spiders from Sri Lanka for identification in the days before iNaturalist , asking me to identify an insect in a video clip. Here’s what I wrote in reply.

A very cool citizen science event in Sri Lanka, on 4 February 2025: a workshop on using iNaturalist plus a bioblitz, organized by Pasindu Dilshan Abegunawaradhana & Salindra K. Dayananda & others of YBA Sri Lanka, at Diyasaru Park, Thalawathugoda. Register by 2 February. 🐝 there! scistarter.org/citsci-sri-lan…

I think this is the first iNaturalist based bioblitz to be held in Sri Lanka, organized by Pasindu Dilshan Abegunawaradhana & friends. Diyasaru Park is on the east side of Diyawanna Lake. As a child I knew the area that became Beddagana Wetland Park, on the other side. inaturalist.org/projects/citis…
