When I was little, this shopping complex was called Yaohan Plaza. Mitsuwa took over when the Yaohan company dissolved, in 1997. I was lucky that my parents took me here, at such a young age. It is a place that, now, is both foreign and nostalgic to me. That is a rare emotion.

As for the Godzilla figurine from the Gashapon machine, it turns out to be Hedorah. That’s cool. Hedorah was always my favorite of Godzilla’s foes. When I was a kid, my father used to say Hedorah was going to find me and kill me if I did not come home in time for dinner.😬

The Gashapon Hedorah has taken his place, next to his uncle, on one of my bookshelves. In the US, for many decades, Hedorah was known as “The Smog Monster” because that was the English name he was given. For some reason, Hedorah scared me most of all. It made me fear smog.

One newer release is a hardcover edition. When I was very young, “Akira,” by Katsuhiro Otomo and Hideshi Hino’s “Panorama of Hell” were the first two manga I ever read. I still have the issues I bought as a kid. It brings back some good memories…
