MOST INJURIES OCCUR FROM DOING TOO MUCH, TOO FAST AFTER DOING TOO LITTLE FOR TOO LONG… Coaches should be thinking of the bigger picture when it comes to prescription of running loads • current level of fitness, • “optimal” fitness target • duration to achieve this target

That time of the season again… switch up from traditional Maximal Aerobic Speed (MAS) Grids… Figure 8’s ✖️ run diagonal @ 100% MAS (90m in 20sec in this example) : short side @ 40-60% MAS (50m in 20sec in this example)…

Extensive Max Aerobic Speed (MAS) [~90% MAS] 70-75sec work Swap with partner (this builds in active recovery b/t reps) - new rules / demands have shown less passive rest b/t phases of play Although unopposed - tech coaches can focus on skill element under physical fatigue

Do you adjust your conditioning for athletes allowing for their speed (max sprint speed) and fitness (maximal aerobic speed)? Quick reference chart based on general fitness (5min TT), speed scores and how they are represented on common team sport distance (m) based intervals ⬇️

Not a football coach but often try to use a sport specific drill for exposure to some physical qualities… Working on rolling acceleration & aggressive deceleration before presenting a reverse pass… technically working on the timing of second run & changing the angle of play.

Y2 students looking at velocity-based training (VBT) in their S&C module. The practical covered programming basics, est 1RM, %-based prescriptions, vs. load-velocity profiles. Velocity loss thresholds & cut-offs showed applied use of VBT for autoregulating training volume 📊🦾

Constraints-Led Approach: AGILITY As a Dad to an u10 Gaelic footballer I’ve been handed the inevitable coach bib - bringing it back to basics 5 attackers vs 6 gates, on the whistle break out creating various 1v1 scenarios - decision making, change of pace, angle of attack

What’s the real measure of success when it comes to coaching youth players? Medals, retention, enjoyment, future success? Something else or some combination of the above? The latest conversation with @PeteyShaw delved into his approach at Terenure College 🧵

Recent theme with a u10 Gaelic football team ‘Find the free player’ Introduced the concept with a closed skill drill (can vary how they receive ball, on the ground, high catch, etc) Progressed by adding def & removing a football to create a more open skill drill 🧠 🏐

Someone said to me recently why do you give drills away!? “As to methods there may be a million and then some, but principles are few. The man who grasps principles can successfully select his own methods. The man who tries methods, ignoring principles, is sure to have trouble”

🧵 3/4 There are 4 types of ASR profiles I typically see: 1️⃣ Fast but fade (High MSS / Low MAS) 2️⃣ Fit but slow (High MAS / Low MSS) 3️⃣ Underpowered (Low MSS / Low MAS) 4️⃣ Sprint-repeat machines (High MSS / High MAS) Each needs a different plan.

Manipulating work-to-rest ratios in supramaximal MAS conditioning isn’t just about intensity, it’s a progression strategy. By adjusting recovery, you evolve the DENSITY of work. Conditioning isn’t always about doing more, the ability to recover faster while sustaining output ✅

75m sprint (25m + 50m) with 25m active recovery & repeat Add a 🏐, hand pass between two players at speed (ensure pass doesn’t slow player coming towards ball!)… You as a coach can control the active recovery based on the goals of your conditioning (walk, jog, shuffle, etc)

Getting ahead of the ball / supporting the play won’t happen by chance and if you are not trained for it!! Particular focus must be on the physical element - strategically exposing / encouraging your athletes to reach max speed builds both confidence and competence ✅🦿🏎️

Simple activity that can be used for conditioning, reps / working time can be manipulated for desired training effect. Players on outside receive, play a hand pass & receive before kicking to opposite side, opposition can be added to increase intent & speed of skill execution.
