When politicians howl for war, it’s worth recalling that the vast majority of the planet is hospitable. I wouldn’t be alive if it weren’t for the kindness of strangers. Evidence from 17K miles (27K km) of walking across the Earth: The World Out of Eden Walk theworld.org/stories/2025/0…

On a long trip away from home, some of the most memorable moments come from the hospitality of strangers. National Geographic Explorer Paul Salopek has come to rely on hospitality daily on his #EdenWalk, traversing the path of human migration. bit.ly/44ifxS4

‘The person who finds his homeland sweet is still a tender beginner. The tender soul has fixed his love on one spot in the world; the strong person has extended his love to all places; the perfect man extinguished his.’ - Hugh of Saint Victor, 12th C. theworld.org/stories/2025/0…

Eighty years ago an American B-29 dropped an A-bomb on #Hiroshima and killed 70-100,000 people. Among the estimated 100,000 human survivors still alive today are 159 aging, still-scarred city trees. Arborist Chikara Horiguchi tends to them like family. outofedenwalk.nationalgeographic.org/trees-of-life/

The charred stumps of a few urban trees sprouted again after a US A-bomb wiped out #Hiroshima in 1945. Today, 159 "survivor trees," still grow in the city. 'They are witnesses,' says arborist Chikara Horiguchi. 'They carry a message we need to hear today.' outofedenwalk.nationalgeographic.org/trees-of-life/

“They are witnesses,” arborist Chikara Horiguchi said of the 159 hibakujumoku, or “A-bombed trees” that yet survive in #Hiroshima. “They carry a message we need to hear today.” But what message, I wonder, since we’re still not listening? RENTING PRIVACY: Where do you sleep while walking 1500 kilometers through #Japan? Where the rooms’ walls box your body like a sarcophagus & the soft ice cream supply is endless. A dim-lit safari through Japan’s network of #cybercafés. Out of Eden Walk outofedenwalk.nationalgeographic.org/micro-solitude/

When city life gets too frenetic or crowded, young #Japanese retreat to cybercafés—a distinctive establishment that offers not just free wifi, but manga comics, bottomless cups of soft drinks, hot showers . . . and privacy rented out by the half hour. outofedenwalk.nationalgeographic.org/micro-solitude/

The Out of Eden Walk logs a 'Milestone' every 100 straight-line miles along our 24,000-mile global trail. We note changing landforms & interview people at each location. But the actual walked miles in between can zoom--up to 380 miles, for example, in China. outofedenwalk.nationalgeographic.org/measuring-the-…

Walking across the globe, I'd planned for years to trek through #Siberia, the land of Indigenous hunters & icy forests. Then #Russia invaded #Ukraine. Trapped in #China, I had to backtrack to #Korea. Our mappers at Harvard CGA logged this gigantic U-turn. outofedenwalk.nationalgeographic.org/measuring-the-…

“The episode was the latest in a string of episodes in which Gazans lost their lives as they gathered to get food.” I suppose that’s one way to ease a famine caused by mass violence: Just shoot the starving civilian survivors. nytimes.com/2025/07/20/wor…

Every 100 miles along the global Out of Eden Walk trail we record the landscape and query the first person we meet with the same 3 questions that we always get: Who are you? Where are you going? Where do you come from? Here’s Milestone 104 in #Japan: outofedenwalk.nationalgeographic.org/milestone-104-…

For hundreds of thousands of years human beings had no privacy. We lived and died in each others’ constant presence. Only recently have we accessed solitude. In #Japan, you even can rent it by the half hour. Out of Eden Walk The World #cybercafe theworld.org/stories/2025/0…

According to the United Nations, Gaza is now plunged into starvation, & suffers “astonishing levels of desperation, with a third of the population not eating for multiple days in a row.” This collective punishment—a war crime—reminds me of warlords I’ve covered. nytimes.com/2025/07/24/wor…

The ruthless junta that toppled #Myanmar’s fledgling democracy, has shot protesters, bombed villages, murdered children in custody & fomented famine just got a reprieve from US sanctions—after sending a flattering letter to Trump. No connection, of course. reuters.com/world/asia-pac…
