We had our first KUT & KUTX Connections social mixer Austin Beerworks 🪙 tonight. We weren’t sure what to expect in the cold, windy weather but hundreds of folks showed up looking to connect with fellow public radio fans. It was fun. Our listeners are the best!

For many people it’s hard to imagine a Texas without pump jacks and oil derricks. But the story of how the state became synonymous with fossil fuels is perhaps not what you would expect. It has to do with a great oilfield con. l8r.it/PFKL

The new season of our power grid podcast The Disconnect is out! This time we look at the oil and gas industry's role in keeping the lights on. We start with the roaring history of martial law, oil bootlegging and con artistry in the East Texas oilfield! kutkutx.studio/category/the-d…

ERCOT is issuing a "weather watch" this Wednesday through Friday (19th-21st). This is basically the grid operator's way of saying they're aware cold weather is incoming but: "grid conditions are expected to be normal during an ERCOT Weather Watch." 1/2

"The Disconnect", KUT Austin's podcast about why Texans were forced to live without power for days in 2021, has hit 1 million downloads. That's pretty dope. Mose Buchele + Matt Largey (real) work so hard on this. Excited to have a small part in the latest season: npr.org/podcasts/10048…

This eliminates funding for NPR, PBS, KUT, KUTX, Austin PBS, Marfa Public Radio, and other stations across the state and country that provide news, community information, and culture and entertainment -- all at a cost to taxpayers of less than $2 a year.

Thank you, Austin Chronicle for giving me a Critics Pick award for my coverage of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (link in thread). I've covered Paxton for more than a decade across two newspapers and, now, public radio. Recently, I've also started covering Elon Musk's

NEW: TX lets out-of-state students buy homes to get in-state tuition. The law has led to an industry of families paying in cash for condos, owning them for 2 years, and selling them to the next out-of-state family. Often, the students never live there: kut.org/education/2025…

At least 36 of those confirmed dead in the Central Texas floods were children. As people sift through the debris, they're finding stuffed animals: a giraffe, a horse, a lamb. Some are trying their best to return them to their owners: kut.org/texas/2025-07-…
