A pair of otters observed mating right on our doorstep this last week. #strangfordlough is the gift that keeps on giving. 🐾🐚 #qml #europeanotter

Our first day on Lighthouse Island with Copeland Bird Observatory has been absolutely incredible. Otters, puffins and Manx shearwater are just some of the many species we’ve been able to see here and we couldn’t have picked a better day for it!

Basking sharks are what now?! New paper led by Dr Haley Dolton (she/her) where we document regional endothermy in our favourite giant filter feeding sharky 🔥. Interesting implications for evolution and ecological advantages of regional endothermy; we thought it was only seen in apex 🦈&🐟1/3

Basking sharks were considered to be ectothermic, we show they have regionally endothermic traits. This changes our understanding of the physiology of this species and might help improve distribution and population forecasting in future. bit.ly/esr_51_227

We had a fantastic morning out with some of our members at Exploris Aquarium. A lovely time was had and delighted that we weren’t too late in the year to see the seal pups!

New Paper available through Endangered Species Research. By combining ultrasound images with hormone analysis, we were able to investigate the reproductive traits of the #flapperskate (D. intermedius). This approach suggests females lay pairs of eggs over winter. bit.ly/3F0BCIz
