I love how Karen A Scott MD MPH FACOG kept centering on Black women and our experiences. If we want to improve health outcomes among Black birthing people, then we have to stop caring about what other folks think about racism. #NJBEC23

The good sis Jabina Coleman has hit the stage talking about Perinatal mood disorders. “Everyone wants to hold the baby, who will hold mother?”

All day I have received good news! Two projects have received grant funding. Two abstracts were accepted for podium presentations. Four keynote invitations. She dreamed and believed in herself. #AcademicLife #BlackNurseScholar #StillDreaming

“The risk of later maternal death — from six weeks to a year after delivery — is 3.5 times higher among Black women, compared with that among white women.” Yet trauma field birth experiences limit postpartum follow up. nytimes.com/2023/05/28/hea…

FYI pregnant folks can and should receive dental care. It’s safe. As per the ADA. To tell a pregnant Black woman who is in pain due to needed dental care to “wait” until after she has the baby and to take Tylenol is unconscionable. Google is accessible, look it up!

Our hearts break for tragic loss of Tori Bowie. Preeclampsia and it’s related cardiovascular complications remains the leading cause of death for Black women. Every Black woman needs access to a BP cuff and education. Regardless of “common” risk criteria.

In the wake of Tori Bowies death let’s not reduce preeclampsia to a hypertensive disorder during pregnancy. It’s much more insidious and serious than that. Involves end organs like the kidneys and the liver. It’s quite more than high blood pressure.
