I never met my uncle, Henry Perrin, after whom I’m named. He was killed in the liberation of Holland, 80 years ago this April 7. A friend recently visited his grave in Holten and sent me this picture. The Dutch have never forgotten Canada’s commitment to freedom. Nor should we.

“Trying to take over Canada is the least popular proposal, with 13 percent of Americans supporting it and 86 percent opposed. Even among Republicans, 71 percent oppose trying to take control of Canada.“ wapo.st/4cWYKb2

The election’s over. Now it’s time to fix problems and move forward together. We all need to put citizenship ahead of partisanship so we can deal with Trump. And we must focus on getting the fundamentals right so we build the resilience to withstand whatever shocks come our way.

For unsuccessful candidates, here is Adlai Stevenson on Abraham Lincoln: “They asked him how he felt once after an unsuccessful election. He said he felt like a little boy who had stubbed his toe in the dark. He said that he was too old to cry, but it hurt too much to laugh.”

“The tourism industry projects a drop in international visitors that will cost the United States $12.5 billion in travel spending this year, falling to less than $169 billion from $181 billion in 2024.” Time to mend this self-inflicted wound. nytimes.com/2025/05/16/tra… via @NYTimes

This is a good day to be Canadian. It’s great to see the crowds enthusiastically celebrating our country and our institutions. Our King delivered a strong message supporting our sovereignty. And the Throne Speech laid out an agenda that’s once again common sense and centrist.

This is very sad news. Marc was a former member of the armed forces, a pioneer in space, a leader in government, and a fine human being. Canada is better for his participation and poorer for his passing. Our hearts go out to his family. ctvnews.ca/montreal/artic…

Canada has a choice: we can act as a sovereign nation by shouldering more responsibility for our own defence or we can be a protectorate. Neither option is free. One costs dollars; the other costs our nationhood.
