Puffin Island seabird ringing season ended with the team catching & colour ringing Kittiwakes as well as ringing chicks in nest. Numbers up on previous years but still lower than a decade ago. Some sat tags fitted last year retrieved & new ones deployed #seabirds #birdringing

We usually catch a few Puffins each year on Puffin Island. There’s only about 30-40 breeding pairs. A 20 year old retrap was pretty cool. Highlight was a Puffling. The nest burrows are so deep, in fissures in the limestone, we can’t usually reach them #seabirds #birdringing

Song Thrushes become so secretive during breeding season. I saw an adult feeding two young on snails it broke using an anvil in our garden early y’day. Must have nested nearby as newly fledged. Quick search found 2 anvils

A real surprise Hilbre Bird Obs today when this very juvenile Wheatear was trapped & ringed. I don’t recall seeing one this young on the island before #birdringing

Juv Rock Pipit CBV was the latest to be colour ringed Hilbre Bird Obs today as part of our long term study. We’re already getting some fascinating results. 33 colour ringed birds have generated nearly 200 sightings

A beautiful sunny day Hilbre Bird Obs today surrounded by the call of juv Sandwich Terns begging for food off parents. Lots of butterflies around and lots of Six-spot Burnett Moths nectaring on thistle flowers

Delicate blue Harebells are in flower Hilbre Bird Obs at the moment. Commonly known in folklore as ‘Witches Thimbles’ or ‘fairy bells’.

2 juvenile Stonechats were a surprise Hilbre Bird Obs this morning in the Obs garden. The nearest they breed is Red Rocks nature reserve. After posing for photos they promptly disappeared

Noticed an unusual looking lump beneath our bird feeders last night & went to investigate. Chuffed to find this Hedgehog. They’ve been scarce locally in recent years
