I feel very used, by this podcast now only featuring two people who have gained acres of coverage for their views on the bill, while other perspectives – including those of pupils who have been through academies and their parents – get roundly ignored.

That is, the perspectives of familiar cast of characters running academy trusts - including successfully such as KB - or representing them,+ politicians defending their policies, are given prominence, while those of people on the end of decision-making on the ground get ignored.

I don’t think that this has ever been better put. It goes to the heart of the matter. Ofsted has no evidence that its judgements are consistent, reliable or valid. Operating on a budget that has declined significantly, the problem of the quality of its judgements is compounded.

And the reason why it matters so much is that schools are small institutions, with leaders who are immediately recognisable, whose reputations depend on Ofsted judgements for which the regulator (Ofsted) has no evidence of their reliability, validity or consistency.

It seems remarkable to me (who has, in the face of some extremely bad tempered reactions) made this point consistently, and for years, that this basic requirement has not been met. Why has Ofsted ducked the evaluation of the quality of its own work?

It is also the case that Ofsted has changed its inspection framework six times in the past 15 years, judging education quality on very different criteria - the latest framework moving away from education quality judged through curriculum quality and back to national test results

So comparative judgements over six frameworks, over 15 years, makes the concept of ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’ judgements on schools even more insecure.

Which is a problem. Isn’t it?
