A Church Times video (yes, video) surveying the views of Synod members - including bishops, lay and clergy members - after Tuesday's safeguarding vote: youtube.com/watch?v=vxWJEe…

Wracking my memory for something similar to Vance and Trump hectoring Zelenskyy on live TV, and the only thing I can think of is that scene in Love Actually where Hugh Grant's PM loses his temper with the US president. Except that was funny, and this is just terrifying.

There are plenty of replies urging Baier to cancel the interview on the basis that Zelensky has 'disrespected' the US. It's an interesting insight into the MAGA psyche, and the limits of their love for free speech.

As much as this is obviously bad news for Europe and Ukraine, it's also bad news for Trump, who wanted the lucrative mineral deal and to be able to paint himself as a peacemaker. The only people actually happy about this are all, right now, watching TV in the Kremlin.

"Despite speculation in recent months, I have felt no sense of inner calling to be Archbishop of Canterbury," the Bishop of Norwich, Graham Usher, said today. He'd previously been considered among the front runners to be the next Archbishop of Canterbury. churchtimes.co.uk/articles/2025/…

It was a real pleasure writing the essay for issue 55 of Kinfolk Magazine . I set out to explore what’s driving the surge of interest in pilgrimage, with the help of a trip to windswept Orkney and a chat with Guy Hayward from British Pilgrimage Trust kinfolk.com/stories/on-the…

Really interesting piece by Tom Westcott about a church in downtown Baghdad. It quotes the custodian: "Every day someone comes here – mostly Muslims – and they all ask me to keep the church open. It was my Muslim neighbours who suggested I made the sign." thecatholicherald.com/a-lone-iraqi-c…

There's something quite moving about a busy NYC street being named after Thích Nhất Hạnh, a Buddhist monk whose writings popularised mindfulness. I wrote about his legacy in the most recent issue of Kinfolk Magazine -- kinfolk.com/stories/life-a…

A young man and a young woman, complete strangers sitting next to each on a train. have started up conversation. So far they’ve been chatting for half an hour. I’m convinced that what I’m witnessing will one day be described in a wedding speech.

This is a really good article, but in judging that "Francis was no liberal" it conflates that term's usage in politics with its applicability to the RC Church. Francis was not a 'liberal' in the political sense, but he could be described as 'liberalising'. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

If you thought Italians were only obsessed with soccer, think again. With the conclave to elect Pope Francis’ successor still days away, a different game has taken over the Eternal City. Welcome to “toto-cardinale” — a spirited, slightly irreverent, and utterly Italian ritual of

All evidence towards my pet theory that if you want to understand the world (culturally, politically, economically) you could do a lot worse than pay close attention to ports and port cities.

This morning, bishops in the Church of England made a strongly-worded collective statement about the war in Gaza. They write that they are "compelled" to state that the bombardment and blockade of Gaza is a "grave sin that violently assaults God-given human dignity".
