A book is worth a thousand spelling tests. And, of course, without being able to read you can’t access the rest of the curriculum. These are not soft skills. This is not a soft subject, says Cressida Cowell on the National Literacy Trust’s new initiative 👇 ebx.sh/axb4ov

This is absolutely crucial from Jonathan Douglas. Libraries and librarians create the readers of the future, ensuring access for all. They are vital, and need to be fully supported and funded!

I’m talking to Harry Wallop on Times Radio this afternoon at about 3.20 on getting kids into books over the long summer break ⛱️ Have lots of thoughts but what are your tips and current or classic great summer holiday reads for children? 📚

Piers Torday Harry Wallop Times Radio Whatever the age of the child, get a book into their hands. Ordered a book to arrive in the post to my 5 yr old niece (she lives over an hour away). Forced 🤣 my 14 yr old to choose a bk to get delivered to our home. Model reading - I will also be reading! 😊

These are my favourite #MiddleGrade (still hate that term) so far this year (2025) Not just great children’s books but great books fullstop.

Jenny Piers Torday Harry Wallop Times Radio I sent a copy of Shoo! By Susie Bower to a young sibling of a reading miniClub member (junior chemo patients) so he got his OWN post to open. He takes HIS book everywhere they go & reads it to/with everyone! 🤩🤣👀💭😎📚

Piers Torday Harry Wallop Times Radio I read every evening to my 13yo daughter. She chooses the book from our very large tbr pile! It gives us the chance to discuss the story, predict what we think will happen, argue over who our favourite character is and explore new/unfamiliar language. ☺️💜

When I was a child, my favourite books were the ones that took me seriously as a reader; the ones that were honest, and didn’t try to soften or simplify the truth, even when they dealt with difficult things. That’s the kind of book I want to write myself. dailybulldog.com/arts/an-interv…
