Day 7. Washington, DC. Finishing a very cold day at the MLK Memorial. And our trip goes full circle.

Day 7. Washington, DC. A 3-1 Washington Capitals win to cap off another excellent day. We must be a lucky charm for the DC teams! And more free merch too!

Day 8. Washington, DC. A trip out to Arlington National Cemetery. First stop, the Marine Corps Memorial, portraying the iconic flag raising on the volcanic wasteland of Iwo Jima in WWII

Day 8. Washington, DC. Arlington National Cemetery. Bringing the threads of our trip together. Telling the story of Medger Evers, WWII veteran and NAACP field secretary in Mississippi. Assassinated in 1963 as a result of his tireless civil rights activism

Day 8. Washington, DC. Thanks to the research of one of our students, we paid our respects to Albert Blithe, one of the Band of Brothers who served in WWII with Easy Company in the 101st Airborne. It doesn’t get it all right, but the series is well worth a watch

Day 8. Washington, DC. The grave of William H Taft. One of only two presidents buried at Arlington. He is the only person to have been both president and chief justice of the Supreme Court in US history

Day 8. Washington, DC. Tying together more threads of the trip. Paying our respects to two legends of the Supreme Court: Thurgood Marshall of the Brown v Topeka decision and the feminist icon that is the notorious RBG

Day 8. Washington, DC. Mrs Hughes on the JFK presidency. His grave, a place of solemnity and reflection.

Day 8. Washington, DC. Finishing our time at Arlington with a visit to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. A fitting place to reflect on conflict, commemoration, and all we have seen on our trip together

Day 8. Washington, DC. It wouldn’t be a USA trip without a visit to Ben's Chili Bowl. A DC institution that has fed presidents, civil rights campaigners, and a whole host of celebrities

Day 9. Washington, DC. Last day. Ford’s Theatre. The place where Lincoln was assassinated and the hopes of Reconstruction began to fade.

St Symphorien where we saw the graves of the first and last casualties of the war. An incredible place where German and British graves sit side by side in respectful silence.

An evening walk to La Brique. What are war graves? What stories do they hold? We looked at Alfred Drake and how he won the VC in a story of bravery against terrible odds.

Our final visits to Tyne Cot and Passchendaele Museum. What an excellent trip. Fantastic pupils both interested and beautifully behaved and the sun smiled on us every day.
