85°N/43°E #Arctic Ocean: we had our first ice station! For many it was the first time on #seaice. So it was an exciting experience and a great learning opportunity! #Polarstern anchored to an ice floe and we took an ice core in the footprint of our microwave radiometers. #PS144

Very excited to be at the EU Polar Science Week in Copenhagen this week. Some of our MOSAiC Expedition Expedition work (showcasing a polar bear group member 😀) was shown during the opening plenary by Mark Drinkwater. ESA Earth Observation European Commission Copernicus EU

During one of the ice station during #Polarstern cruise #PS144 the upward-looking cloud radar observed cirrus clouds (lower left), which you can also see in the lower right and upper left photos. Find more information under follow-polarstern.awi.de and blog.uni-koeln.de/awares/.

Update from Janna on #Polarstern expedition #PS144 in the #Arctic Ocean: "I am observing these frost flowers currently quite often! Super beautiful! I am not sure whether they alter the microwave radiometer signal, but I plan to find that out 😉"

Update from the #Arctic: Winter is coming and the days are getting shorter on #Polarstern! However, sometimes we are rewarded with a beautiful sky (if there is no fog...😉). We are now leaving the ice and during our way out we are encountering this peculiar ice type: pancake ice!

Hi! I’m Max, a new group member and PhD candidate since September. I studied #Meteorology in Hamburg, where I worked with airborne remote sensing observations of #arctic #clouds. My PhD research will focus on #seaice albedo and melt ponds, using #satellite and field observations

Polarstern is back! During the last days we disassembled our instruments, packed boxes, took care of our freight lists and got rewarded by Aurora Borealis at night! Bittersweet feelings: missing sea ice already but seeing family & friends again (+ eating fresh fruits!) #arcwatch

This week we had our group retreat near Stade. Discussing #satellite, #seaice and #polar #climate, and getting to know each other better. 🛰️🧊❄️

Curious about how #arctic #warming is literally slowing down #polar #bears? Find the answer, along with insights into the below-average #seaice extent at both poles, in the latest Sea Ice Portal article - featuring our colleague Gunnar: meereisportal.de/en/news-overvi…

The#Arctic sea ice extent is currently at a record low of 11.5 million km², d 1.5 million km² less than the 1981-2010 average. This vast area (about 4 times the size of Germany), once ice-covered and home to a unique ecosystem, is now ice-free.
