Hey folks, I'll be in NYC Sunday & Monday -- would love to catch up with folks working on any subset of vaccines, ML for bio, robotics, and public policy. Feel free to comment here or email me at my_first_name [at] popvax dot com.

I recently spoke at Ethereum Devconnect ARG about PopVax ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณโ€™s work developing novel mRNA vaccines to save 1 million lives each year, as part of a series of talks organized by vitalik.eth around his d/acc vision โ€“ defensive, differential, and decentralized accelerationism. (1/4)

Vitalik, via his biosecurity and public health organization Balvi, was the first to believe in our vision of leveraging the 10x cost & speed advantages of doing R&D in India to develop fundamentally broader, safer, and more transparent vaccines, and is our largest funder. (2/4)

Our soon-to-be open sourced COVID-19 vaccine funded by Vitalik & Balvi is designed to protect against both current & future variants of SARS-CoV-2, aligning with the goals of d/acc. It will enter a Phase I trial in the US conducted & sponsored by NIH NIAID News in 2025. (3/4)

We now seek to apply our v/acc approach โ€“ vaccine accelerationism โ€“ to HCV, Strep A, and TB, three pathogens which collectively kill ~2 million people a year, and for which there are no existing effective vaccines. More in the video below: (4/4) youtu.be/OXxo49WrODQ

While we all certainly hope that H5N1 influenza doesnโ€™t mutate into a strain that causes a pandemic in humans, there is the distinct and unnerving possibility that it does, as Alex Tabarrok (h/t Patrick Collison) and commentary in the NEJM have recently noted.

How do you make a 250x better vaccine at 1/10 the cost? Develop it in India. (Soham Sankaran, Ep #2) There's a lot of discussion these days on how China's biotech market is on track to bypass the US's. I wondered: shouldn't we have observed the exact same phenomenon with India?

We need fundamentally better flu vaccines that are robust to at least 6 months-1 year of strain mutation such that they can deliver 80%+ efficacy reliably in any given flu season. We're working on this PopVax ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ.

The Economist asks: Do viruses trigger Alzheimerโ€™s? I strongly suspect they do! One of our key hypotheses PopVax ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ is that latent infection is upstream of lots of nasty long-term illnesses, as demonstrated recently with the linkage of EBV (mono) to multiple sclerosis.
