1/ Very concerning remarks emerging that UK Govt may delay vital restrictions on #JunkFood multi-buy promotions in 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿. This would be a #FalseEconomy. This is also one of the policies critical to reducing obesity, the second biggest preventable cause of cancer. Michelle Mitchell👇

For goodness sake!! Completely the wrong idea. The #Policy was to ban BOGOF on unhealthy #hfss foods ONLY. Promotions on healthy foods would have been entirely appropriate. Dropping ban means people can still overspend and overeat products linked to #obesity

Food regulations 2021 was supposed to be a first step in positive direction to counter decades of unhealthy food promotion and normalising it. Such a shame they have been delayed due to poor policy decision making. Doesn’t help with cost of living crisis. bbc.co.uk/news/uk-614430…

If we fail to control diet-related diseases, on top of paying for an ageing population, there will be no possibility of lower taxes in the future. Another compelling reason for the need to support consumers and go ahead with BOGOF restrictions. William Hague

Really pleased that HFSS placement regulations coming into force from tomorrow 1st Oct. An important step towards making retail food environments healthier. 👏

Our research with 22 enforcement officers also highlighted the need for immediate ring-fenced resources. By not funding, we risk enforcers not able to support business compliance and a landmark food policy not achieving its intended public health benefits. bmj.com/content/378/bm…

🧵On Wednesday I gave the inaugural RSPCA Australia Wilberforce Lecture. I argued that we need to change our relationship with animals radically, not just for their sakes, but for ours. The human species. (You can read the full lecture here bit.ly/3Dh6VPq) 1/

We synthesised views from >100 stakeholders across the food system - most believe this is an important first step in UK food policy but effectiveness is threatened by: I) exploitations of loopholes, ii) product and business exemptions and iii) higher cost of healthy foods.

Food promotion and placement legislation doesn’t land equally on all consumer groups, businesses and local authorities. Further Government support is required for effective and consistent implementation and enforcement. Our new rapid analysis paper 👉bmcmedicine.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.11…

The UK government has got the legislation in place to agree the principle. Now there is a need to refine reflecting on the policy recommendations in the paper. bmcmedicine.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.11…

A fantastic few days attending #FENS2023 in Belgrade learning about latest nutrition research. Grateful for the opportunity to share some of the findings (enforcers’ perspectives on HFSS legislation) from my PhD with international colleagues.
