Wonderful few days out and about with Dr Will Mills exploring some wonderful Terminal Late Pleistocene/early Holocene landscapes in beautiful Fife and Midlothian. Great seafood too!

Today we’re extracting collagen from tiny bone samples from Tarradale, ahead of isotope analysis and ZooMS. These analyses will help us identify the species fragmentary remains, and tell us about the Scottish Mesolithic food web TarradaleThroughTime @arkeostrida Sonic Horizons

Intriguing! Could LUP/Meso projectiles have been poison-tipped?! A quick scan through Rosie Bishop’s work tells me that (potentially) poisonous genus Lathyrus has been found in the Scottish Mesolithic palaeobotanical record at at least three sites… ☠️ 😱

A bit of experimentation going on at PALaEoScot HQ at the moment, trying our hand at some portable XRF and ICP-MS to differentiate lithic sources. Don’t worry, no ancient lithics were harmed in the making of this science!

‘Fishier than the average bear’ - isotope data may point to polar bears in the Inchnadamph bone caves prior to the last glaciation maximum 🐻‍❄️

Alicia is spending lots of time getting to know the animals of the Assynt bone caves - one of the most important Late Pleistocene sites in Scotland. Their will help us understand not only what species are represented but also help us understand how the deposits were formed 🦌 🐻
