Early May, unprecedented flooding in Nairobi led the Ministry of Interior | Kenya to order residents of informal settlements to evacuate 30-meter riparian zones within 48 hours. We've seen widespread forced evictions & demolitions, with Kibera awaiting its fate. #SpareCommunityAssets

The ongoing evictions & demolitions endanger KDI's long standing partners in Kibera & many of our projects from the past 18 years. At risk are the Kibera Public Space Projects (#KPSPs), vital environmental, recreational and livelihood infrastructures #SpareCommunityAssets

The 13 community-owned public spaces have been co-designed and built by hundreds of Kibera residents in partnership with Kounkuey [KDI] since 2006. The total investment made into these projects amounts to 630,000 USD (80 million KES). #SpareCommunityAssets

The project closely collaborated with local leadership, including the Chief, MCA, MP, and government agencies like Nairobi City County , NEMA Kenya , AAK Architects , Kenya Met Department 🇰🇪 ,NairobiWater_Care , Ministry of Agriculture & Livestock Development . #SpareCommunityAssets

Kibera's past was marred by overflowing pit latrines and "flying toilets". #KPSPs, sanitation facilities, and free laundry pads now promote hygiene. Destroying them risks a return to the past, and erases hard work in health. #SpareCommunityAssets

Kibera faces flooding, causing damage, displacement, and disruption. #KPSPs reduced impacts with green infrastructure, improved drainage, and flood barriers. Demolishing #KPSPs would worsen conditions, risking lives and property. #SpareCommunityAssets

#KPSPs established public water points and storage facilities, ensuring a steady supply of clean water & reducing the burden on residents, particularly women& children, in accessing safe water. Removing #KPSPs risks this vital resource. #SpareCommunityAssets
