🚨Thanks to May van Schalkwyk Commercial Determinants Research Group at LSHTM for leading on this new paper “The politics and fantasy of the gambling education discourse: An analysis of gambling industry-funded youth education programmes in the United Kingdom” thread below👇 #CDOH @lshtm

If the voluntary levy remains the primary method of funding, the independent research that is desperately needed, including about gambling and suicide, will not get done. No more status quo. The government is soon to release its gambling white paper, with much discussion in the media this week about what it may contain. Everyone in the UK should be taking note as this white paper touches us all 🧵

Important thread from May van Schalkwyk showing that gambling reform is possible and exposing the tactics used to derail it: failing to focus on products and policies, ignoring good enough evidence and insisting on perfection. We know these tactics inside out. Time to get past them.

It was a real privilege to travel to Geneva and see the amazing work being done by KhanLab at Cornell CALS. Collaborations can help us to understand the 'culture' in horticulture!

Disease resistant good fruit quality cultivars should be the focus of fruit breeding. Newly released disease susceptible 🍎 🍏 cultivars need frequent sprays & are costly to the environment. We need responsible #PlantBreeding for sustainable future.

So depressing to hear @lucyfrazermp say that regulations must not get in the way of 'people who want to have a flutter'. Please stop using the cosy image of a two pound bet on the National to justify a massive commercial industry based on exploitation.plutobooks.com/9780745340395/…

In the interests of transparency, will the organisations involved in consultations following the #gamblingwhitepaper including Department for Culture, Media and Sport Department of Health and Social Care and Gambling Commission undertake to publish lists of attendees, the reasons they were selected, and to make public the content of the meetings?

This inquiry focuses on a health-harming industry & how to regulate it – can we assume that it will hear from Directors of Public Health & leaders in the field of commercial determinants of health, many of whom work in the UK? 🧵committees.parliament.uk/work/7170/gamb…

The failures of the current system have been known for over 10 years thanks to Jim Orford. Vicious Games explains why nothing has changed. We need a new gambling Act that focuses on preventing harm rather than growing an extractive industry. plutobooks.com/9780745340395/…

Good to see BBC News (UK) holding Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan to his promises. We should all have the right to control how much gambling advertising we want to experience #newgamblingact bbc.co.uk/news/uk-englan…

At present the Gambling Commission & local authorities have a statutory duty to aim to permit a harmful industry. A new Gambling Act based on the prevention of harm is needed urgently to protect the public from the gambling industry's exploitative practices & products.
