Announcing a new and very exciting pterosaur: Skiphosoura bavarica. This animal is an important key in understanding pterosaur evolution and here's here in all it's glory: cell.com/current-biolog… artwork by Gabriel N. U.

This is a darwinopteran from the Late Jurassic beds of southern Germany making it just under 150 million years old. It is incredibly complete, nearly every bone is there, AND it's preserved in 3D, a first for this clade!

The darwinopterans are themselves really interesting, representing the transition from the earlier pterosaurs to the derived pterodactyloids. They've only been known since 2010 and while we have a load of them, they are generally rather incomplete and often crushed.
