We understand that Bradford Council is concerned about the works needed to bring Queensbury Tunnel back into use. But there is good evidence from the extensive investigations carried out by AECOM in 2018, which remain mostly valid. The key to cost control is good project management.

We understand Bradford Council will pursue a surface route through Queensbury for a Bradford-Halifax active travel link. If so, it would be another depressing example of a public body spending our money on a poor option because it’s cheaper than the best option and easier to deliver.

So did @BradfordMDC challenge National Highways over its excessive refurbishment costing? Will it really pursue a “highly compromised” surface route? Will it protect the tunnel against abandonment? Is NH the right custodian for our legacy railway structures? Time to seek answers.

One of the reasons for National Highways inflated £26.4M tunnel repair cost is that they have included £1.6M to core 450 holes through the crown and haunches of the arch to investigate the extent of the overbreak. There is no need to do this.

One of the reasons for National Highways inflated £26.4M tunnel repair cost is that they have included £195K for forced ventilation. This is presumably in response to the hundreds of cyclists asphyxiated every year in Bath's mile-long Combe Down Tunnel. There is no need for this.

Jacobs (Crackers)' tunnel repair costing of £26.4M is unsustainably high for several reasons. One of them is that they have included £11.2M to spray 2,050 yards of the tunnel with concrete, destroying its heritage value and tourism benefits. There is no need to do this.

Jacobs (Crackers)' tunnel repair costing of £26.4M is unsustainably inflated for several reasons. But it would have been even higher if AmcoGiffen hadn't rejected the consultant's proposal to drive passageways through the infill at Nos. 2 & 3 shafts using bespoke boring machines!

Queensbury Tunnel National Highways I was there on the opening day of the Bath 2 tunnels route. Many hundreds of people cycled through together that day, the tunnel was full. Lack of oxygen didn't seem to be an issue. I live in hope I'll experience the same at Queensbury tunnel one day.

Our estimate for repairing Queensbury Tunnel is £13.71M, including a 20% contingency. Including tourism, this would raise the Benefit:Cost Ratio to >4:1, representing very high value for money. If we’re serious about promoting modal shift, we need the Queensbury Tunnel Greenway.

We had a constructive meeting with officers from Bradford Council yesterday to discuss the recent feasibility study into the Queensbury Tunnel Greenway and its implications. This was not a post mortem but National Highways has made our job much harder. We came away with an actions list.

Whilst the fight to connect the district of Bradford to the borough of Calderdale rumbles on, lets have a look at what it would take to connect Clayton and wider West Bradford to the GNRT! michaelbradleysblog.wordpress.com/2025/01/14/why…

We have received a response from Simon Lightwood MP, the Minister responsible for local transport, following our letter of 23rd January to Heidi Alexander MP, setting out our ongoing concerns about National Highways management of Queensbury Tunnel and its impact on potential repurposing.
