For the beginning of August, turn back the clock to 1798 and Nelson’s annihilation of the French fleet at the Battle of the Nile. A battle at sea that was almost unique for its strategic consequences and owed much tactically to the GFOJ. podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the…

I always love filming documentaries, but this one - this one was personal. Absolutely thrilled to have been able to tell the stories of some of the most courageous, brilliant women in history in Channel 4's WW2: Women on the Frontline - catch it now on demand!

The latest book considers the development of 18th century maritime law in the context of the Seven Years’ War. It also holds significance for the wider application of seapower and the development of international maritime law. naval-review.com/news-views/lat…

Written by my colleague Andrew Livsey (Andrew Livsey), this is a great constructive challenge piece. For all our talking about physically preparing/transitioning to war, we also need to think about our organisational structures & doctrine.

Is this the most significant opposed landing of the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars? Phil Ball aka Hindu Stan knows a thing or two about amphibious ops in the Fr Rev period, anyhow, and has done a top-notch bonus episode exploring the British in Egypt in 1801.

The Battles of Algeciras were remarkable - a British ship of the line striking, two 110-gun Spaniards blowing up with 2k deaths, and the French strategy which failed at the Nile working out this time round. We've got a bonus episode examining it in detail, out now.

As described so well by the The Lubber's Hole podcast, the Battle of Algeciras is the finale to Patrick O'Brian's Master And Commander. (I can't wait to return to the start of the canon in their company - I'm now on book 15/20, and they continue to do an amazing job...)

This is a very strong rebuttal of a rather poor article. If unqualified 'vulnerability' is the issue, then aircraft from static air bases top the list, and land formations within range of a powerful enemy are close behind. Which is why how they operate is key.

New battle episode! The Glorious First of June: few fleet actions offer such an ambigous result. A tactical British victory, but the French coming out on top strategically? Bernie W. Campbell returns with Dr Rachel Blackman-Rogers and Olivier Aranda to analyse this critical battle.
