In light of Lucy Letby's conviction and the sometimes disturbing turn that discussion of it have taken, the 1st known case of a qualified nurse killing child patients - in SE London in 1918 - was considered similarly baffling and horrific at the time: academic.oup.com/hwj/article/80…

One of the children afflicted, James Smith, died shortly afterwards. Fellow nurses at Sydenham Infant Welfare Centre, who had fought to save these babies when their condition deteriorated, were baffled and distressed. They noted all had happened during Thompson's night shifts.

Reading Paterson’s Joseph’s ‘The Secret Diaries of Charles Ignatius Sancho’ at this v moment. It is excellent - a model of historical fiction writing, imo

I wrote a short article about Annie Parker, a Victorian woman who embroidered using her own hair during her approx. 400 stints in prison. Her needlework tells us much about her life and the suffering she faced due to addiction. Check it out here: historytoday.com/archive/miscel…

A bit late for Valentines, but still love the idea of men gifting a box of C18 beauty patches to a sweetheart even if ‘out of fashion’.

#OTD in 1909, Muriel Matters flew a hot air balloon over Westminster. “Votes for Women” was painted on the balloon, and she planned to drop leaflets over London, but she was blown off course. Her stunt made headlines across the world.

I knew the Bank of England prosecuted female forgers, but not that they paid each convict on a transport ship £5 to ‘alleviate in some degree the distresses and wants brought upon them by their prosecution’.
