Benthalbella dentata, the Northern Pearleye is a midwater lizardfish with not only telescopic eyes but also special organs called pearl organs that may allow them to expand their range of vision! Collected on the R/V Sally Ride for the #SiphWeb project with Anela Choy #fishes

Led by Anela Choy, Scripps scientists are aboard the R/V Sally Ride, using mid-water trawls to sample siphonophores – colonial invertebrates related to jellyfish – and deep sea fish. Learn more about Choy's work and the #pollution that plagues these depths: youtube.com/watch?v=Zc-X9q…

This Highfin Dragonfish, Bathophilus flemingi, has a stunning bronze-gold sheen under angled light. Encountered on the #SiphWeb R/V Sally Ride cruise lead by Anela Choy #dragonfish #deepseafish #lilcutie

Cruise picture: SR2011 R/V Sally Ride. After two weeks in the ETNP #OMZ, we are going back to San Diego with lots of samples and data. Time for packing and testing during 5 days of transit. #science #oceanography

Sea-going scientist and staff member Melissa Truth Miller has been on over 40 research cruises, including many on R/V Sally Ride. Melissa said the late Sally Ride is one of her role models due to her work as an astronaut, physicist, and #STEM educator. "What an amazing life and career."

An expedition that would normally take two years to coordinate was fast-tracked in five months thanks to a team of researchers including scientists at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Aboard the R/V Sally Ride, they'll scour the seafloor for DDT waste barrels. latimes.com/environment/st…

Great shot by Captain Wes Hill from the nearby R/V Roger Revelle of R/V Sally Ride leaving San Diego. Read more about the ship’s important next mission in the Los Angeles Times. 📷 by latimes.com/environment/st…

“We want to provide a common base map of what’s on the seabed at a high enough resolution.” Scripps’ Eric Terrill discusses an expedition aboard R/V Sally Ride & use of deep-sea ‘Roombas’ to comb the sea floor for DDT waste barrels off Catalina. Via Los Angeles Times latimes.com/environment/st…

Scripps researchers aboard R/V Sally Ride are using underwater "Roombas" to scan the seafloor for discarded barrels of DDT. The robots will help researchers create a detailed map of the dump site, a first step in understanding the issue. Via Smithsonian Magazine smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/dee…

"In terms of the mission, I’m just mind blown. They have to cover almost 50,000 acres of seafloor at 3,000 ft deep.” Rosanna Xia describes how Scripps researchers aboard R/V Sally Ride are using underwater robots to search for DDT off California. Learn more: latimes.com/environment/st…

I got to know lots about Sally Ride from my job at her academic home for over 20 yrs UC San Diego School of Physical Sciences & occupying her former office at Cass.ucsd.edu. Her legacy lives on SRS @ UCSD and the world's newest and most sophisticated oceanographic research vessel R/V Sally Ride

Scripps scientists aboard the R/V Roger Revelle are live on YouTube as they sample hot vents at the East Pacific Rise. Led by Ross Parnell-Turner, they're monitoring the vents during the buildup to the next seafloor lava eruption, which is expected in a year or so: youtube.com/watch?v=d9Z2gW…

Today we're celebrating the birthday of the late Sally Ride: trailblazing astronaut, physicist, UC San Diego educator, and namesake of our ship R/V Sally Ride! 🎉 Ride's legacy lives on through SRS @ UCSD, a #STEM-focused education program that she co-founded to inspire youth.

Cool news alert! A newly discovered seafloor feature has been named in honor of the late Scripps geophysicist Walter Munk. Mapped by R/V Sally Ride in 2019, the Walter Munk Guyot is located 1,000 miles south of Honolulu & rises 12,500 ft above the seafloor: scripps.ucsd.edu/news/seamount-…

In 2019, researchers and crew onboard R/V Sally Ride mapped a seamount located 1,000 miles southwest of Honolulu. 🚢 Now, that seafloor feature has been named in honor of the late Scripps Institution of Oceanography geophysicist Walter Munk!
