We have lost one of the true giants of the screen. Gene Hackman could play anyone, and you could feel a whole life behind it. He could be everyone and no one, a towering presence or an everyday Joe. That’s how powerful an actor he was. He will be missed, but his work will live on

What would Nugget say? ā€˜The cuts will undermine the ability of ANU to deliver on its mission’ canberratimes.com.au/story/9010812/…

Strong statement of concern from Australian Academy of the Humanities over ourANU cuts, warning "the cuts pose a serious threat to Australia’s national intellectual and cultural capabilities." NTEU agrees. Time to stop the cuts. humanities.org.au/news/alarm-ove…

From bluey to bogans: Researchers who help define how the nation speaks to lose their jobs at ANU: sad news indeed. smh.com.au/national/from-…

Kristen Alexander (@kristenauthor) 's Twitter Profile Photo

I can't believe ANU is proposing to disestablish the Australian National Dictonary Centre. Over the last 20 years of writing I've often consulted staff over the origins of obscure words and phrases. We need the dictionary to record and explain our changing language.

The ANU proposes to abandon the study of Australian English - but cybernetics is on the up and up! Truly, the worst University leadership in my lifetime. From bluey to bogans: Researchers who help define how the nation speaks to lose their jobs smh.com.au/national/from-…

Australian National University (ANU) is closing the Australian National Dictionary Centre* & its Humanities Research Centre as part of its major budget cuts. Australia's "cultural cringe" lives on. [*traces Australian language: what's a "larrikin"?] smh.com.au/national/from-…

This piece is on the proposed closure of the Australian National Dictionary Centre at ourANU. NTEU will be holding a rally tomorrow at 12pm in Kambri against this sort of destruction, and the damage of Renew ANU more broadly. smh.com.au/national/from-…

Anyone who cares about the history of language / thinks language is an important part of a nation's culture, will be appalled at this. I don't know how irrevocable the decision is; if you know of anyone who could join the call to keep the centre open, please let them know. …/
