Anyone else simultaneously looking forward to BERA next week and also lacking the energy to construct their paper? 🤦🏻‍♀️

Having a productive time at BERA2024. More people here working on parental engagement (in broadest sense) than I've experienced at other conferences which is great for me. My own paper on mothers' agency in homework is in 4pm slot for anyone interested.

Beginning work on Family Engagement InSET for large academy chain. Great to be working with a MAT whose focus is the importance of engaging with parents & families. Aiming to prompt conversations abt how 'engagement' is experienced by parents: so why do parents do it like that?

Clicker at the ready. Laptop & notes packed. (Fun episode of Peppa Pig sourced - shh!) I'm all ready to meet staff from across Transform Trust schools tomorrow, to talk about my research into families' experiences of 'parental engagement' #TogetherWeLearn Transform Trust

How to think abt classroom behaviour from the child's perspective: Why are you sharpening your pencil, Tom? It gives me agency within restricted processes, enables me to move my body when I'm asked to be still, gives me thinking time, & releases my stress when the work is hard.

Inspired by another post, my take: Writing a book is like trying to squash kids' slime between your fingers. It continually leaks everywhere, taunting you with "no I want to be like this" & "add me in, add me in" & "forgotten this bit haven't you" & "your structure's all wrong!"

Working on something new at the mo. Feeling deep in it. I knew it wasn't right, but I was tinkering at the edges. Conversation yesterday with an uninvested colleague and I suddenly realised how easily I could fix it. 1 big structural change later & it's both better & simpler.🙌

"when comparing a large MAT to a similar sized LEA area ... the MAT is likely to be spending £6.7 million less on classroom teachers and educational support staff than is typical in the LEA-maintained sector, but will be operating at a higher cost to the public purse.'

Just submitted a paper I am really excited about. Why does it feel like my heart as well as my work is on the line? #caringtoodeeply

in analysing 563 behaviour policies from the 34 largest multi-academy trusts in England, i show how 'misbehaviour' is associated with a constellation of linguistic features - these are of course not empirically connected, but ideologically connected.

Delighted to share our new, open access paper on "reflective parenting" in international contexts. We use a processual approach to explore shifts in contemporary parenting approaches in China & Turkiye. Thanks in particular to Dr Yuwei Xu 徐玉炜 for trusting me to take the lead on this.

Thoroughy enjoyed hearing Dr Andrea O'Reilly, originator of matricentric feminism, talk on the continued need for a matricentric feminism, 60 years into the feminist movement. Favourite phrase: doing "the archeology of maternity" ie finding the gritty, messy stories of motherhood

Very much looking forward to this. The international crossover between Dr Carolyn Clarke's work and my own will be make for a great discussion.
