1/2) As all funding for 24-hour residential placements was being removed from East Cork in 2021, this is how local HSE management were spending money on security for a largely vacant facility in Blackpool named Millfield House... irishexaminer.com/news/munster/a…

This letter from the MHC Board to an Owenacurra resident sidesteps clear legal obligations of the MHC,namely to enforce the provision of placements that meet the residents' needs. Some have been moved to substandard facilities outside East Cork with lower MHC compliance ratings.

It would take people with serious influence & avowed commitment to the rights of people with disabilities such as Bernard Gloster Deirdre Madden & Fergus Finlay to intervene. So far the HSE Board have not done so despite numerous detailed briefings and representations.

The Owenacurra closure doesn't just affect residents. It deprives many people in East Cork with similar needs of vital respite & residential placement. They now have no option but to be referred to facilities outside East Cork. Shame on the HSE for withholding those figures.

"The NMBES report said confidently to almost 900 participants: “...your voice will be heard by those with responsibility to change & improve maternity bereavement care in 🇮🇪.” We all let them down if we do not continue the conversation." irishtimes.com/opinion/2023/0… Keelin O'Donoghue

Fantastic piece of writing from my UCC Medicine & Health colleague Keelin O'Donoghue on the need to recognise and discuss the reality of pregnancy loss. "We desperately need to end the silence, stigma, inaction and inequality around pregnancy loss in Ireland" irishtimes.com/opinion/2023/0…

Please Bernard Gloster reverse this senseless closure. The rights of residents have been breached here. East Cork is being left without an invaluable service.

Epic analysis of the Owenacurra story by Cianan Brennan. It shows how determined campaigning can yield remarkable outcomes. It also highlights the powerlessness of residents who did not have representation, faced with an unyielding decision to disperse them to inferior settings.
