Laila is a resilient single mother & returnee from Iran. After graduating from IOM's EU International Partnerships 🇪🇺🇪🇺-supported apprenticeship programme with 200 others, mostly returnees, she now earns a steady income at a women-led business, crafting beautiful Afghan handicrafts & clothing.

A second group of women have successfully graduated from a midwife training programme supported by UNHCR, EU International Partnerships 🇪🇺 with partner WSTA.ORGANIZATION in Bamyan. They’re looking forward to working to help tackle the country’s high maternal & child mortality rates.

Dramatic scenes unfolding in Central and Eastern Europe.   My thoughts are with all those whose lives have been affected by the floods, and I salute the rescuers who are working tirelessly to save lives.   The EU stands ready to mobilise emergency assistance via EU Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid 🇪🇺.

Today, the new Head of EU Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid 🇪🇺 in 🇺🇦 Marianna Franco joined UNHCR in Dnipro to witness the impact & destruction from Russian attacks + meet displaced families & hear their stories. 🙏EU🇪🇺 for your support enabling us to react fast during emergencies + support those in dire need.

Along with World Health Organization (WHO), an European Commission delegation visited Kabul's National Cancer Diagnostic & Treatment Hospital. The visit underscores the 🇪🇺's continued commitment to enhancing care and improving the quality of life for those affected by non-communicable diseases in #Afghanistan.

Due to increased demand for flights from #Lebanon, we have activated the #EUCivilProtectionMechanism to coordinate safe departure of EU citizens from Beirut. I thank 🇳🇱, 🇸🇰 and 🇮🇹 for offering chartered flights that have so far transported 665 people to Europe.

Solidarity in action: many thanks to the #EuCivilProtectionMechanism for contributing to the two flights from Beirut which allowed 🇮🇹 and 🇪🇺 nationals to depart. We'll keep supporting those on the ground.

In Afghanistan, 23.7 million people - more than half of the population - need emergency assistance. The European Union has made available an additional €35 million to cover the most urgent needs. This brings 🇪🇺 humanitarian funding to Afghanistan to over €160 million in 2024.

✈️ A new flight of the EU Humanitarian Air Bridge to Kabul has just landed, the last scheduled this year. In 2024, a total of 4 flights have carried over 390 tonnes of vital relief items, delivered across the country.
