Do colleagues here sometimes get the feeling that many believe philology is just about knowing/speaking/reading—and maybe translating and annotating texts in—a (foreign) language? Philology used to be an exact science, encompassing textual criticism, historical linguistics, etc.

The name for Japan in medieval China was *wa 倭 (> Mand. wo). There is a strong tendency in literature to claim that it meant "dwarf" (i.e., like 矮), but there seems to be very little base for this particular reading in the actual historical sources. 1/11
