Exciting hybrid course; and a great way to bring together, under one umbrella, multiple areas of expertise scattered across the Earth System Governance Project Please share widely! A great initiative from Rakhyun E. Kim and colleagues at Utrecht. Looking forward to being part of it again this year!

A growing number of environmental institutions are “zombies”—done with their job, yet persisting for own survival. They create illusions and block more relevant institutions. It’s time for them to exit with dignity. International Whaling Commission could set an example. nature: doi.org/10.1038/d41586…

Interesting call to review international conventions. Those working to safeguard nature and the environment are understandably protective of institutions and scant resources: but we need to be able to reflect on when it is best to adapt, merge or stop.

“When identifying leverage points, we often focus on synergies & how to scale them up. Addressing critical trade-offs or conflicts is equally important. If these 'problem shifts' are not addressed, we risk paralysing the entire environmental treaty system” Rakhyun E. Kim Utrecht University
