Despite suffering from the military junta's brutality, women and the LGTBQ community are fighting to save Myanmar. My latest report, "Courage Amid Crisis: Gendered Impacts of the Coup and the Pursuit of Gender Equality in Myanmar" is now in Burmese: ohchr.org/sites/default/…

Meeting with ICC Prosecutor Kahn in The Hague, I described his arrest warrant request for Myanmar junta leader Min Aung Hlaing as a pivotal, long awaited moment for justice for the Rohingya that must be seized upon with action. ohchr.org/en/press-relea…

Political leaders should call the Myanmar junta's election scheme what it is - a fraud. You can't have a legitimate election when tens of thousands of political prisoners are behind bars and opposition leaders and journalists are tortured and killed. reuters.com/world/asia-pac…

The Myanmar military junta is hoping that the world will accept what it is alleging will be an election later this year. You cannot hold a free and fair election when tens of thousands of political prisoners are behind bars and the right to free speech and assembly is illegal.

Today's earthquake is yet another disaster for the people of Myanmar, who have already been suffering since the military coup launched four years ago. A strong international response is imperative to get aid to the many who were in the cross-hairs of this terrible quake.

The junta's response to Cyclone Mocha and Typhoon Yagi demonstrate its willingness to weaponize aid in the midst of natural disasters. The world must work with the National Unity Govt., ethnic organizations and civil society groups to reach those in desperate need.

The junta should follow the National Unity Government in declaring an immediate ceasefire. Military conscription should be suspended, aid workers should not have to fear arrest and there should be no obstructions to aid getting to where it is most needed. Every minute counts.

The focus in Myanmar must be on saving lives not taking them. Junta military attacks must stop. Obstructions to aid must be lifted. Young people should not be fearing arrest or conscription. The international community must step up with greater levels of emergency aid. Now.

Senior General Min Aung Hlaing has described ongoing junta attacks in the midst of Myanmar's suffering as "necessary protective measures". They are neither necessary nor protective. They are outrageous and should be condemned in the strongest possible terms by world leaders.

Just when it appeared that the junta was heeding calls to stop military attacks and allow aid to get to those in desperate need, there are reports that these attacks have resumed in Myanmar. I urge the convening of the UN Security Council to address this deepening crisis.

UN expert calls for emergency Security Council action to address ceasefire violations after devastating Myanmar earthquake ohchr.org/en/press-relea…

UN Special Rapporteur Tom Andrews (@rapporteurun) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Even as the UN Security Council was welcoming ceasefire announcements in Myanmar, military attacks continued in earthquake ravaged areas. It is time for a UNSC resolution demanding that all military operations stop and obstructions to the delivery of aid be lifted immediately.

While calls to extend a non-existent ceasefire are well meaning, they will not stop the Myanmar military junta's relentless attacks on civilians. Cutting off their supply of weapons and weapons materials will. For the people of Myanmar, action speaks louder than words.

I am outraged by credible reports that Rohingya refugees were cast off an Indian naval vessel into the Andaman Sea last week and have launched an inquiry into such unconscionable acts. I implore Indian authorities to refrain from life threatening treatment of Rohingya refugees.

The Malaysian FM asked reporters in Kuala Lumpur - about the point of having an election in Myanmar "if it is all just a whitewash to cover up the eyes of the international community?" Exactly. I urge ASEAN to stop the whitewash by rejecting the junta's so-called "election".
