Around 3,500 crofters have not confirmed that they are living within 20 miles of their croft as required by law. That is a serious concern. Absentee crofters, like absentee landowners, seldom give rise to vibrant rural communities. Action required... bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

It's that time of year again... making jammy magic from the haul of blackcurrants 🥰 This year it's a week early, and two weeks earlier than in 2023!

Thousands of mini suns strain to find the big one. A trillion tiny eyebright stars. Our meadows are awash with life & growing fast. The yellowness is threaded with pinks/purples- clover, knapweed, vetch, ragged robin shooting skywards. With every step insects flit & hum. The joy!

Dear bob mortimer if you are in our neck of the woods, pop in for a cuppa. We're not too far from Inverness airport 😉 ... well, only a couple of hours, but the brew plus cake and mountains and rivers and lochs and the sea would be worth the drive over. 😊

My 11yo grandson (Will) is reading Philip Pullman's Northern Lights. Says it's the best thing he's ever read. I'm reading my old (English) copy alongside him. Now I know why I've a cousin named Lyra, he says. We both bubble with joy. Wait til he reads The Subtle Knife, I think 😉

Silver haar, a moonstone sky above and curlicues of pale blues below. High summer magic in the North West Highlands 💙 View over the Minch this morning.

Surreal, serene conditions this afternoon. Warm sea; the air, heated. I've not known a summer like this. The strange stillness was almost warping time - futures present, pasts renewed - yet the happy energetic voices of our grandchildren kept me rooted to this place, this day.

A big weather change this afternoon. Rain clouds gathering, mists rising (with midges) and a warm breeze by the sea. We badly need rain but we're already missing the sun! An Teallach from 'Destitution Road', Wester Ross, Scottish Highlands.

Heat, intense light, colour, hue and chroma. The afternoon sky, sea and shore... a (symbolic?) view for these troubling times. Red Point beach, Wester Ross, Scotland, 20/7/25.

Wildlife Twitter/X friends... Is this a badger paw print? Thanks in advance for your help. Found in the margins of the river which runs through our croft, close to an old ford. 😊

Alex de Waal is one of the world's foremost experts on famine. Listen to every word he says about Israel's forced starvation of the people of Gaza: "There is no case since WW2 of starvation that has been so minutely designed and controlled"

This beautiful 9-page letter, scented with desert sagebrush, came today. It's nature writing at its best. Reminds me of Gretel Ehrlich's great book, The Solace of Open Spaces. It contains the most generous offer of friendship. I didn't know my own small book could travel so far!
