La Resistencia further says that Sanchez-Castro had been kept in medical isolation while at the detention center due to an opioid use disorder and had been experiencing withdrawals. According to the Tacoma Fire Department, a medical service call was recieved on 7:05am that day.

The group accused the detention center, which is privately operated by GEO Group, of a pattern of systematic medical neglect. During a visit by congressional staffers in August, GEO Group officials said they did not have access to medications needed to treat opioid dependence.
