Have you ever done a dense grid search over neural network hyperparameters? Like a *really dense* grid search? It looks like this (!!). Blueish colors correspond to hyperparameters for which training converges, redish colors to hyperparameters for which training diverges.

New paper in Cell w/ Caroline I Jahn on how the brain learns to control attention in a changing environment! Attention is learned incrementally from reward, and it maps stimuli into a generalized value space to guide decisions in many settings. 🧵cell.com/cell/fulltext/…

🔥New paper by Lagzi and Adrienne Fairhall examines feature sensitivity and structural bias in inhibitory neurons which can emerge as a network, but not a single cell phenomenon, mediated by randomness, correlations, and homeostatic plasticity. (1of2)

Brain mechanism of foraging: Reward-dependent synaptic plasticity versus neural integration of values. pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn…. We are now at AIND testing these ideas using neural recordings, perturbation experiments, NM imaging during foraging, and team science!

In 2019 I went to Cambridge to debate Máté Lengyel on the usefulness of Marr's Three Levels of Analysis. We've finally published a pair of "CrossTalk" articles in Journal of Physiology laying out our positions. My piece: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/share/author/Y… #MarrNoMore #DownWithThe3Levels

Retinal waves are known to instruct neural circuit refinement in development. But can they also help train ANNs to better process real-world visual stimuli? YES! Check out the brilliant work of Lilly May biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
