I always liked Law # 4 of the H of G, The patient is the one with the disease, but these days this is less likely than 40 years ago to be true. The true state of burn-out is only to be addressed through deep structural and systemic change in our delivery systems. And narrative!

Columbia welcomed colleagues from Scotland, Norway, and Ireland yesterday. We all learned so much from you all! Thrilling to find our international connections through narrative medicine. Do visit again! @SQSFellowship@NarrativeMed

At ASBH & AAMC meetings, arts & humanities & narrative medicine abound. Our voices count. I heard Rana Awdish at AAMC--extraordinary journey through art, including her own paintings--toward sight & truth. We thank you, Rana RanaAwdishMD #narrativemedicine Narrative Medicine

At AAMC now for FRAHME meetings #FRAHME with Liz Gaufberg, Lisa Howley, Pam Schaff, people from NEH and NEA and NAS thinking hard about Fundamental Role of Arts & Humanities in Medical Education. Tremendous work and inspiration. We are growing in number, power, and wisdom.

These surreal times call forth compassion despite the fear. Let us all endure. David Brooks writes, "In every pandemic, there are doctors and nurses who respond with unbelievable heroism and compassion. That's happening today." I hail our colleagues all. nytimes.com/2020/03/12/opi…

Eager to be with you all today. So much to say about how stories work, why we tell them, how we listen to them, and what role they play in our ever-complex health care. How can we best to equip clinicians with the narrative knowledge and skill that fortifies their practice?

Great to read Trish Greenhalgh's endorsement of our up-coming NM Workshop. Trish, you and I have been fellow travelers in the vast territory of narrative and medicine. And I think we have, between us, made some headway! Warmly, Rita

Here is a link to a BuzzFeed article about the tension between attention to individual patients with COVID and reports of the bloodless statistics of cases and deaths. I told them we need them both. Good holidays to you all, in these fraught times. buzzfeednews.com/article/scottl…
