Nice to hear my first Willow Warblers of the year today. At least 4 around Rammamere Heath. Great to see these signs put up by The Greensand Trust on the gates to hopefully stop dog walkers letting their dogs run all over the heath. Let’s hope it gets the message across.

ScrubUpBritain up & running again as of this morning from a long time off of social media. How is everyone doing? A very busy time with all of the team out & about on fieldwork. Very much looking forward to working closely with this new reserve in East Suffolk - scrub galore!

❌ Despite strong cross-party support and passionate speeches from MPs, the Planning and Infrastructure Bill committee voted against the Chalk Stream Protection amendment. Chalk streams are one of our most special habitats and yet we are failing them.

Two rare male Hen Harriers have disappeared from their nest sites at RSPB Geltsdale within a few days of each other. 🚨 It follows the 2023 shooting of another Geltsdale male on neighbouring land. This shocking loss points to yet more illegal killing: rspb.org.uk/whats-happenin…

Labour promised to restore nature. Instead, their Planning Bill contains a licence to destroy it. We offered solutions. We’re done waiting. Part 3 of the Bill would gut the laws protecting our most precious habitats & species. Without significant change, it must be scrapped.

Sometimes I’m asked ‘why do you care?’ ‘Swifts are one of the oldest species on earth. They spend more time airborne than any other bird yet when they come home they come home to us. They’re on the brink. They just need a brick with a hole in it.’

My first Dark Green Fritillary of the year today in one of the meadows at a site I manage in the Chilterns. 4 Marbled Whites and a Painted Lady among 10 species. Also a Marsh Tit was the first I’ve seen there for a while
