Wonderful Wander today with @GlossopCreates. Perfect weather, great archaeology, a good bunch of people, and look... some 17th/early 18th century pottery. Lovely Nottingham Stoneware cup with banded decoration; & a Staffordshire Slipware cup. #Glossop #Archaeology

A medieval pilgrim - detail from the fragmentary remains of the Shrine of St. William of York. Originally located in York Minster, the 14th century shrine was broken up at the Reformation. Now part of the collections at the Yorkshire Museum in York. 📸 My own. #SundayStonework

Bits found whilst Master CG was windsurfing in Torside Reservoir. A pair of 17th century sherds (Slipware & Nottingham Stoneware) & a stone roof tile - probably from the demolished post-medieval Torside Farm. Also, glacial erratic pebbles left over from the last Ice Age. #glossop

What ho! Just published a new article on the website - suitably military themed for the 80th anniversary of VE Day; interesting finds from a dump site. #Glossop #mudlarking #archaeology #WWI glossopcuriosities.co.uk/2025/05/08/a-f…

Sherds found on Old Lane, Simmondley. Some fairly standard bits, but also a nice chunky lip to a large cider flagon or chemical carboy. I love this track... A medieval one preserved in situ. #Glossop #archaeology #pottery #mudlarking

Another beauty of a sherd found whilst watching Master CG windsurf at Torside Reservoir. I may have to do a proper fieldwalk survey next time. This lovely thing is a late Georgian bowl of some sort. I feel a blog post coming on... #Glossop #Longdendale

A mason's mark! On a lump of masonry originally from Wood's Mill, in the place where the mill once stood - now Glossop Brook View. Probably post-1842 in date, though possibly earlier... It was hidden until demolition c.2015. Who was 'B' I wonder.

Been stone bothering down south this week! An healthy dose of prehistory via Stonehenge, West Kennet Long Barrow (Silbury Hill in the background) and Avebury (a nice pint in the Red Lion Avebury, too). Oh, and finished off the new Where/When. A wonderful short break!

Seen on Princess Street - the scars of WWII's home front recycling campaign: cast iron railings cut off to send to the furnace to make weapons. How much was actually used remains uncertain - most was dumped - but it helped morale at least. #glossop #derbyshire #history
