E-prescribing was meant to "improve the quality of patient care" (CMS). Instead it often handcuffs pts. Can't take the script to a pharmacy where it's cheaper. The med my husband needs today is out at our local pharmacy and script can't be transferred. Sigh.

Thanks for the repost of my book, My hubbie had stage 4 esophageal. You don't realize just how profiteering and dysfunctional it is until you're a patient

Healthcare is overrun with companies that perform clever accounting exercises rather than change anything fundamental about the care we deliver. And we celebrate the heck out of them. How do we stop being gaslighted and gaslighting ourselves and raise the bar?

Want to understand how our health system got to be such a profiteering, money-extracting, care-less-for-patients industry? Sadly, my book, seven years on, is more relevant than ever. Americans should stand up and demand better. amazon.com/American-Sickn…

Abbvie spent $377 million on incredibly annoying ads for its drug Skyrizi, whose wholesale Acquisition Cost (WAC), is $21,017.36. It's a useful drug but why the adverts? What's the payback in terms of patients converted to users? fiercepharma.com/marketing/abbv…

Thanks New York Times Opinion for the list of questions for RFK Jr’s confirmation hearing. And for asking me to contribute one of them. Much is at risk here. A crib sheet for Congress. nytimes.com/2025/01/28/opi…

My darling husband Andrej passed away this week and I feel utterly shellshocked, despite an ocean of love from my kids, family and friends around me. I was familiar with death as an MD and a journalist, but I never comprehended its in-person devastation.

Did I seriously see a not very important regional health care system drop $8m on a Superbowl ad? And they say they're broke?

Day 4 after my husband Andrej's death from cancer: Just another Monday in NYC. The 1 train is packed, as is West Side Market. How can everyone be acting so normal, when my world has turned upside down? Feel like I should wear a sign "My husband just died."

Day 6 after my husband, Andrej's, cancer death: I fill out an intake form for an MD appt . Have to check a box indicating if I'm married or widowed. I'm somewhere in between. Why do we ask this question anyway? Why is marital status relevant to illness?

Americans who thought they knew what a trip to the doctor was going to cost them still don’t. Elisabeth Rosenthal writes for KFF Health News + The Washington Post. ā¤µļø washingtonpost.com/opinions/2025/…

After a break to attend to family matters, I'm happy to be back to writing. But I'm sad that these surprising -- but not "surprise bills," according to law -- are targeting innocent patients. Mine for Washington Post Opinions KFF Health News washingtonpost.com/opinions/2025/…

NEW: The No Surprises Act was heralded as a landmark piece of legislation that would protect people who had health insurance from receiving surprise medical bills. And yet bills that take patients by surprise keep coming. Elisabeth Rosenthal reports. ā¤µļø kffhealthnews.org/news/article/n…
