During my PhD, I got alot of unhelpful advice Now I'm a PhD supervisor, I know ๐ฏ what I needed to hear 4 things every PhD student should know ๐งต #phdchat thoughtsofaphd PhD_Genie The PhD Story Happy PhD Supervisor PhDiva Refocused

Apparently chitons can leap out of a holding tank and crawl away across a gauntlet of pavement and leaf litter. Who knew? #chiton #buyerbeware #marinebiology #labworkfail ๐ท by Randy Marquez & Chris Jendrey

Protip: when collecting sunflower seastars, serve them up on a macroalgae platter to reduce unnecessary jostling and stress! #pycnopodia #MarineBiology #scubadiving #fieldwork #science ๐ท by Kindall Murie

Marine ecologist Ross Whippo ๐ณ๏ธโ๐ was lucky enough to spot this whitelined toadfish (Sanopus greenfieldorum), typically heard but not seen on the reef. The species is endemic to #Belize and can be heard croaking, err signing, to woo a mate. #marinescience #fish #coralreefs

Doesn't this reef resemble a city ๐๏ธ? The variety of structures of corals, sponges, & other reef-builders is not just mesmerizing, it can influence the diversity and abundance of animals on it, a pattern we are studying with #MarineGEO surveys ๐ ๐ก๐ฆ๐ ๐ธ: Ross Whippo ๐ณ๏ธโ๐

It's the season of light, you say? Sometimes called the jewelfish because of its gemlike dots, the juvenile phase of the yellowtail damselfish lights up the reef ๐๐คฉ ๐ธ: Leah Harper & Ross Whippo ๐ณ๏ธโ๐ #biodiversity #artinnature #transformationtuesday #Belize

๐๐Ross Whippo ๐ณ๏ธโ๐ on the ๐ธ of this spotted eagle ray! Spotted eagle rays (Aetobatus narinari) are common but always a welcome encounter, especially at the end of a survey. This one cruised over the sea grass before stopping to dig for mollusks ๐ฝ๏ธ #Belize #scuba

Channel flounders usually rest on the seafloor, but this one wanted a room with a view. Rested atop an old coral head, this flounder quickly changed colors when it was approached, but never swam off. ๐ธ: Ross Whippo ๐ณ๏ธโ๐

#Shark encounters are particularly #uplifting ๐คฉ๐ฆ Check out this swim-by from two different perspectives... & wait for the eyes! ๐ ๐ฝ๏ธ: Ross Whippo ๐ณ๏ธโ๐ & Maggy Benson #biodiversity #research #Belize #scuba #wildlife #fish
