Did a book on just what an impossible question this is, particularly as I went back in history to 1878. Billy Meredith, Joe Spence, Johnny Carey all deserve big shouts to be included. In the end I selected from 1954 when first went . We agree on 6!

He is in my best 11. Despite only appearing from 16-21 he was so obviously going to be the best player in the world baring injury, it was a true loss to the game

Agree totally with word legends. My book on a possible best ever United,Xl showed these are two who deserve recognition. Meredith 300 games for both United & City winning league & Cup with both,45 caps Wales. Soence still in top 10 or so of United, appearances AND,goal scorers.

The side was led by Laurence Cassidy, a Manchester school master who Matt Busby played as centre forward to guide the younger players. Cassidy himself was a Prolific goal scorer. Bobby Charlton played at times for the A side. It was United's last season in the Manchester Lge.

Game v Leeds 1964 caused the sides to come off late in 2nd half. I interviewed the referee Jim Finney who said he could not see who players were .Took them off, Leeds winning 1-0 and Don Revie went berserk. In the end Jim went back as smoke died down, game completed, same score.

Hi Rob great tribute, did you not go to Partizan ground where the match was actually played as Red Star stadium could not take numbers who wanted to attend?

Roy Cavanagh MBE (@roymbe) 's Twitter Profile Photo

The Partizan ground hosted all internationals then as well, held 55,000 whilst Red,Star held about 30,000. Denand for tickets was huge hence the switch.England played there 3 months after the crash and lost 5-0! United certainly played there in 1966 semi final of European Cup.
