Join us this month in exploring items and stories from the earliest portions of our collection. During the eleventh century coins were produced in a number of mints throughout England, like these silver pennies of Cnut (1016-35) struck at York and Lincoln.

Although at first glance difficult to decipher, the inscriptions on late Anglo-Saxon coins follow a standard format: the name of the monarch is placed around the obverse portrait and the moneyer's name and town appears on the reverse. #Coins #Medieval #History

Rather than the centralised production we are used to today, mints in the late Anglo-Saxon period were distributed across the country. By the reign of Æthelred II (978-1016) coins, such as the penny illustrated here, were being made in more than 70 towns. #Coins #Numismatics

The range of coins expanded during the reign of Edward IV through the issue of gold angels and ryals, together with their fractions, and combined with a number of silver coins to create an increasingly sophisticated coinage system. How many can you identify? #Coins #Numismatics

In 1377, Richard II ascended to the throne at only ten years old. The majority of coins struck during Richard’s reign are silver, and are of typical denominations for the period. Gold coins, such as this Noble, were struck to a far lesser extent. #Coins #Numismatics #Gold

In 1544, towards the end of his reign, Henry VIII instituted a policy of debasement. The pictured Henry VIII type 2 #sovereign shows a resulting reduction in diameter, which actually required slightly modifying the design of the enthroned portrait to accommodate the reduction.

Early in the reign of Elizabeth I a recoinage was undertaken that was aimed at restoring faith in the fineness of the coins. It came to be regarded as one of the greatest achievements of her long reign and a commemorative medal was struck to mark the occasion. #Coins #Medals

The death of Edward VI meant that Mary I inherited a currency in a state of transition. Many of the country mints had been closed. Some of the sovereigns issued by Mary I bear the date 1553 or 1554 in roman numerals and are the only Tudor sovereigns to be dated. #Coins #Gold

This intricate, textured medal is the design of Maureen O'Kane in 2016 for the British Art Medal Society. Entitled 'Round Dance', this medal highlights the importance of the bee to our world and the threat posed to the species by pesticides. #Medals #Bees #Sustainability

One of the Museum's more intriguing collection items is a Second World War trench art lighter featuring a 1939 halfpenny. This piece is an example of coins playing an emotional as opposed to and economic role in the setting of war, possibly created as a personalised reassurance.
