Benjamin Reifel is believed to have worn this quilled vest as a young boy. Raised on the Rosebud Reservation in a bilingual Lakota-English home, he made history in 1960 as the first Oceti Sakowin tribal citizen elected to the U.S. Congress.

Opening tomorrow! "What’s Going On Here?: Art to Inspire Conversation" This exhibition uses three simple questions—What’s going on here? What do you see that makes you say that? What more can we find?

Artist Spotlight: Ben Suga Ben Suga’s handcrafted ceramics have long been a favorite in our Museum Store — and for good reason. Originally from South Dakota and now working in the Catskill Mountains, Ben blends traditional Japanese forms with a quiet, contemporary sensibility.

American flag imagery is a popular motif of Lakota beadwork spanning the 19th century to today. As a powerful form of artistic expression, these pieces stand as complex symbols by their creators. This vest was collected between 1900-1915 by Albert Wentzy.
